A little while ago I wrote about the immorality that is at the base of christianity: if god loves us so much, why set us up to fail? A murderer can be forgiven, but an atheist will burn in hell for questioning god. At the same time, a supernatural god would have the power to demonstrate his existence in a way that would convert all atheists. So why doesn't he? After all, he loves us and wants us to be "saved".
A couple of times people use the free will argument: god gave us free will and with that came the possibility to fail. Pay attention to how this doesn't answer the question on why god does not show himself. I think it is even a better demonstration of free will: there would be a real choice. What if I gave you the choice between this phone right here that you can see and a mysterious invisible phone? Would you really have a fair choice? If this deity stopped playing hide and seek, and people would STILL decide (free will!) to refute him, at least they made a conscious, deliberate decision.
What did you say? God is showing himself, but I choose to ignore it? Let me put this out here, black and white. I will tell you exactly what it would take for me to believe in this deity. I would fall to my knees, pray, become the most faithful christian / muslem / jew ever straightaway if the clouds cleared, god popped his head out of those clouds, informs me he is my creator and then gives me the secret codeword. God doesn't even need to go that far, a letter with the secret code word will do, or a phone call. It is right there, in my head. Surely your god must know my thoughts, after all, he claims to smite me for thinking the wrong things. Just one word, and I will be the most humble servant he has ever had. The "evidence" we have at the moment simply is not good enough. Surely god loves me enough to whisper one word to me? After all, he helped you find your car keys?
