Today I read an acticle that puts the blame for the abuse scandals in the Catholic Church on gay priests. I am shocked and appalled to read that some people still think homosexuality has anything to do with child abuse! There is not a single study that proves that homosexuals are more likely to molest children, or that these priests even WERE homosexuals. Even though it is surprising that in the 21st century people would believe this nonsense, it is not that difficult to imagine when you realize these are the same people who believe a guy was crucified to purify the human race from 'sin' and that the world was created in give or take a week.
What is offensive to me, is not the fact that there are people in the church who believe stupid shit. I have known that most my life. What is so disgusting about it is that the real problem is not at all tackled because these people are looking in the wrong direction. The answer to these abuse scandals is not to get rid of gay priests, it is to get rid of a system where priests are not accountable for their actions, where abusers are protected from civil law and where criminals can continue a carreer in which they are given power and control. As long as these men are allowed to work in the church where they are in a trusted, priviledged position, the abuse will continue. The problem is not sex, the favourite activity for the Vatican to demonize, the problem is the authoritative position of these abusers.
As long as the Vatican is allowed to look in a more convenient direction, this problem cannot be solved. We need to speak out against these articles and these assumptions and force the church to deal with these issues properly.
